The station bell liked to ring loudly. DING! DING! DING!
One evening, a family of dormice arrived with a sleeping baby.
“I must tell everyone the train is ready,” the rabbit conductor said. “But I would like the baby to keep sleeping.”
Maya looked at the bell. Comet looked at the baby. Then they both looked at a long silver ribbon on the ticket desk.
“Could we show the signal?” Maya asked.
The conductor held up the ribbon. It shimmered in the lantern light. Maya carried a small sign that said TRAIN READY. Comet walked beside her on soft paws.
The travelers noticed the sign and quietly picked up their bags. The dormouse family rolled their little basket onto the train.
The bell stayed still. The baby stayed asleep.
“Tonight,” said the conductor, “our signal can whisper.”
The train slipped away with a gentle hum, and the silver ribbon curled back onto the desk.
