A maple leaf floated in a shallow puddle by the bakery. Comet wanted it to sail to the other side.

He blew hard. The leaf spun in a circle.

He waved both paws. The leaf bobbed, but stayed near the edge.

“Maybe it needs a smaller breeze,” Maya said.

Comet took a little breath and blew softly. The leaf drifted forward.

Maya set another leaf on the water. This one had a curled edge. It turned gently as it sailed.

The friends watched their tiny boats from the dry path. They did not need to hurry them.

When a breeze came through the garden, both leaves reached the far side.

“My biggest puff did not help,” Comet said.

“Your gentle puff did,” Maya replied.

The baker called them in for warm bread. Comet gave the little boats one last wave. Sometimes a new idea could be as small as a softer breath.
