The friends were having a picnic beside the station. Maya spread a cloth. Comet put out cups. Pip brought a basket of berries.

“Everyone is here,” Pip said.

Maya looked down the path. Their friend Nell the snail was still coming. She carried one berry on her back.

“She will take a long time,” Comet said.

“We can save her a place,” Maya replied.

They put a little leaf plate beside the cloth. Then they began their picnic slowly, telling Nell what they could see as she came closer.

“There is a cloud shaped like a mitten!” Pip called.

“And one like a pear,” Nell answered from the path.

At last she reached the plate and set down her berry.

“You saved a seat just my size,” she said.

The friends shared the last of the berries. Nell told them about a silver beetle she had met along the way. Nobody else had noticed it.
