Maya found a smooth pebble shaped like an egg. She washed it and painted a small sun on one side.

“I want to give this to someone who helped me,” she told Comet.

She thought of a very big rescue. But nobody had needed rescuing that day.

Then the station door opened. The conductor held it while Maya carried her painting tray inside.

At the desk, Pip moved his basket so she had room to sit. Later, the baker showed her where the clean brushes belonged.

Maya looked at her sunny pebble. There had been plenty of help after all.

She gave it to the conductor with a note: THANK YOU FOR HOLDING THE DOOR.

He set the pebble beside his clock.

“That was a small thing,” he said.

“It helped me,” Maya replied.

On the way home, she and Comet noticed three more little kindnesses. They did not need more pebbles. They could say thank you.
