Maya and Comet lay on a picnic blanket with the gardener. A pale cloud drifted across the blue sky.
“A rabbit,” said Maya.
“A teapot,” said Comet.
They looked at each other.
“It cannot be both,” Maya said.
The gardener smiled. “Show me what you see.”
Maya pointed to two long shapes that looked like ears. Comet pointed to a curved piece that looked like a handle.
The cloud slowly changed. One ear grew round. The handle stretched out.
“Now I see a boat,” Maya said.
“Maybe a slipper,” Comet replied.
They began calling it Maybe. Maybe it was a rabbit. Maybe it was a teapot. Maybe it was something neither had thought of yet.
When the cloud sailed behind an apple tree, they did not need to pick a winner.
Maya liked seeing Comet’s teapot. Comet liked finding Maya’s rabbit. The same little cloud had given them two ways to wonder.
