Maya carried five blue buttons to the station. Each looked like a moonberry. She planned to sew them onto her little travel bag.

Beside the gate, Pip the mouse held a scarf with a loose flap.

“My button rolled away,” Pip said. “Now my scarf will not stay closed.”

Maya counted her buttons. Five would make a pretty row. Four would leave a little space.

She held out one button. “This one could help your scarf.”

Pip thanked her. The rabbit conductor found his sewing basket and fixed the scarf while the friends watched.

Maya put the four other buttons in a row on her bag. In the empty space, she drew a tiny blue heart with her fabric pencil.

Pip touched his warm scarf. “Your bag looks different now.”

“Yes,” Maya said. “It has room for a story.”

On the ride home, her bag rested beside a mouse who no longer felt chilly.
