Maya and Comet made a little blanket fort beside the sitting-room sofa. The gardener helped fasten the blanket to two chairs.

Inside, it was cozy. It was also dark.

“I cannot see my book,” Maya said.

Comet pushed up one corner, but the whole blanket slipped.

The gardener helped them put it back. “What else could you try?” she asked.

Maya folded a small part of the edge upward. The gardener clipped it safely in place. A patch of lamplight came through.

“Our fort has a window!” Comet said.

They placed a cushion under the opening. Maya could see the pictures now, and Comet could see the gardener resting nearby.

They added a paper sign: TWO READERS AND ONE WINDOW.

At bedtime, they took down the fort together. Maya put the sign on her bookshelf. Their cozy place had worked because they changed one little thing to fit what they needed.
