Nell the snail brought an empty paper tube to the garden. She called it her tiny telescope.

“It does not make things bigger,” Maya said after looking through it.

“No,” Nell replied. “It helps me choose one thing to notice.”

Maya aimed it at the apple tree. Through the circle, she saw one leaf with a yellow tip.

Comet pointed it toward the flower bed. He noticed a bee resting on a purple flower. He watched from the path and let it be.

Nell used the tube to frame a little patch of moss. It looked like a soft green forest.

They passed the tube around without pointing it at the sun. Each friend found something the others had missed.

Maya drew the yellow-tipped leaf in her notebook.

“There was a whole garden,” she said. “But I like this one little part.”

Nell smiled. Her simple tube had opened a window onto things that were already there.
