On the evening train, a traveler had placed her suitcase on the seat beside her. Maya wanted that seat for Pip, whose little legs were tired after the garden fair.

She frowned. The traveler seemed to be keeping a whole seat just for a bag.

The conductor came down the aisle. Instead of beginning with a scolding, he asked the traveler whether she needed help finding a safe place for her suitcase.

She looked relieved. “The handle has come loose. I was afraid it would slide into someone’s feet.”

The conductor showed her the luggage rack and helped secure the bag. Maya had not noticed the loose handle. Once the suitcase was safely stored, the traveler invited Pip to sit down.

Maya sat across from them with Comet. The traveler asked about their fair, and Pip showed her his moon bookmark.

By the next stop, Maya’s frown had faded. A question had helped them solve the problem without deciding first that the traveler was unkind.

The conductor reminded them that a polite question would not always reveal a perfect reason. Even so, it often made a useful place to start.

The train hummed toward home. Pip rested his tired feet, the suitcase stayed secure, and the empty seat had become a space for two travelers to share a quiet conversation.
