A wooden drawer at the station squeaked whenever the conductor opened it. Maya offered to help label its compartments after the station team repaired it.
The repairer arrived just as Ada began the evening reading hour. He set down his toolbox and noticed a row of travelers settling onto cushions.
“I could hammer this loose board now,” he said, “or measure it quietly and return to finish in the morning.”
The conductor asked whether the drawer was safe to leave until then. The repairer checked it, marked it out of use, and said yes. They would keep the needed tickets in another tray overnight.
While Ada read, the repairer measured the board and wrote the sizes down. Maya sorted the labels at a side table. Comet rested without hearing a single hammer strike.
The next morning, the repairer finished before the reading room opened. Maya placed the labels inside: GARDEN, CLOUD BAKERY, and HOMEWARD.
The drawer slid smoothly. The repairer’s work had not become less important because he had changed when he did its loudest part.
That evening, Ada thanked him during a quiet pause before the story. Maya looked at the labeled drawer and the listening travelers. A useful plan could make space for two needs at once: fixing what was broken and letting everyone hear the ending.
