Maya promised to help Pip paint his outdoor picnic sign on Saturday. By morning, rain was tapping on every window.

She watched the puddles grow. Perhaps Pip would know they could not paint outside. Perhaps he would wait on the porch anyway.

The gardener helped Maya send a note to the station, where Pip collected his messages. Maya explained that the wet weather would spoil the paint and asked whether they could plan the lettering indoors instead.

Pip replied that he had been wondering the same thing. He brought the unpainted sign into the bakery’s workroom with the baker’s permission.

They spread scrap paper on the table and tried several letter sizes. Their first title was too wide. A shorter title fit, and Comet helped arrange paper leaves around its edges.

When the rain ended the next day, Maya returned with the gardener. Pip painted using the plan they had made. The sign read COME SHARE A LITTLE WONDER.

“I thought a promise meant the day had to go exactly as planned,” Maya said.

Pip rinsed his brush. “I mostly needed to know that you had not forgotten.”

Maya folded their lettering plan and kept it beside her notebook. The rain had changed their afternoon. A clear message and a new plan had helped them keep caring about the promise, even when they could not keep the weather.
