From the garden path, Maya noticed a paper wrapper caught near Moonberry Creek. Farther along, there were two more beside the picnic bench.

“We should clean the whole creek,” she said.

The gardener agreed that litter mattered, but explained that water edges could be slippery. They would stay on the dry path together and collect only safe litter they could reach with her litter picker. Unknown or sharp objects were an adult’s job.

Comet held a bag open. Maya counted three wrappers and one empty paper cup. Pip made a sign reminding picnickers to take their rubbish home.

The creek still stretched farther than they could see. Maya felt that their little bag had not changed much.

Then Ada arrived for her evening walk. She noticed the clear bench and read Pip’s sign. She took her own snack wrapper away with her instead of leaving it behind.

The gardener arranged a larger cleanup with the station team for another day. Their small effort was not the whole answer, but it was a useful beginning.

Maya washed her hands at the bakery and looked out at the path. She could care about a big place without doing everything alone or taking an unsafe shortcut.

As dusk settled, the friends left the creek to its soft water sounds and went home with a smaller, kinder plan for tomorrow.
