For the garden picnic, the baker offered bread, berries, and a new herbal spread. Maya loved trying new things and wanted everyone to taste the spread with her.

June chose plain bread. Maya began to explain why the spread was delicious, but the baker gently reminded her that an invitation could stop after one offer.

June did not need to explain her food choice to the whole table. The baker made sure each guest could find food that fit their needs and kept the serving utensils separate.

Maya moved the spread bowl closer to herself and asked June about her moth drawing instead. June showed her the pattern she was adding to one wing.

They talked about how to make the wing look like a tiny map. Pip brought paper so everyone could draw after eating. Comet settled beside the basket, happy with his own picnic snack.

Maya noticed that the afternoon had not become less friendly because June’s plate looked different. They still shared a table, a conversation, and an idea.

Later, Maya helped the baker clear the plates. A space where the spread might have gone was not something she needed to fill.

On the way home, she drew two picnic plates in her notebook, each holding different things. Above them she wrote: We can enjoy being together without making every choice the same.
