The gardener received two packets of seeds from an old friend. One label read MOONBERRY FLOWERS. The other had faded so much that only a few letters remained.

Maya wanted to call the second packet silver daisies. The seeds looked like some she had seen before, and silver daisies would be lovely near the porch.

The gardener brought out her notebook. Their shapes were similar to several different seeds. A guess might lead them to plant something in the wrong place.

“So what do we write on the label?” Maya asked.

“Not identified yet,” the gardener replied.

They kept the mystery packet separate and asked the friend who had sent it. Until the answer arrived, they planted only the clearly labeled seeds and left room in the plan.

The next letter explained that the mystery seeds were a climbing bean meant for a tall frame. The gardener arranged the right support before planting them.

Maya changed the temporary label to CLIMBING BEANS. She kept the words NOT YET in her notebook because she liked what they had allowed her to do.

Not knowing had not made her careless or foolish. Pretending to know might have caused the trouble. Saying what was still uncertain had given the garden time to get ready.

By evening, the labeled pots rested in their proper places, each with a plan that fit what they would grow.
