Maya spread thirty little paper moons on the kitchen table. She and Comet had made one for every evening of their story month.
Some moons had drawings. One showed a leaf boat. One showed Pip’s scarf. Another had a tiny thank-you sun.
“Which night was your favorite?” Maya asked.
Comet chose the lantern moon. “I helped a rabbit see the puddle.”
Maya chose the cloud moon. “We saw different things and both had ideas.”
The gardener brought a long sheet of paper. Together, they pasted the moons into a winding path. They left room at the end for new evenings.
They did not have to remember every word. Each little picture could bring back one moment.
Maya hung the path beside her bookshelf. Comet settled on his cushion beneath it.
“What comes next?” he asked.
“Another story when we are ready,” Maya said.
But tonight, they looked at their thirty moons, shared a quiet smile, and said one more little goodnight.
