The conductor hummed while he washed his supper cup. Maya listened from the kitchen table.

“I know that tune,” she said. “But I cannot remember where I heard it.”

Comet guessed the bakery. The conductor shook his head gently.

Maya guessed the garden picnic. That was not it, either.

The conductor hummed the last soft notes. Maya remembered a silver train moving through clouds.

“It is the train’s little song!” she said.

“Yes,” he replied. “I like to hum it when the work is nearly done.”

Maya tapped its slow rhythm with one finger. Comet hummed a note that came out more like a happy fox squeak.

Nobody minded. They sang the little tune once together, then let the kitchen grow quiet.

Maya put the clean cup on the shelf. A song could bring back an adventure without sending anyone anywhere. Tonight, remembering was enough, and home was a lovely place to stay.
