The gardener had a small list by the porch door. Each line showed a picture.

“What is it for?” Maya asked.

“It helps me put the garden to bed,” the gardener said.

First came a watering can. They checked which pots needed water. Next came a basket. They gathered the hand tools and returned them to the shed.

The last picture was a closed gate. Comet watched while the gardener checked its latch.

“Does the garden need a bedtime story?” he asked.

“Maybe you can tell it one,” she said.

Comet told the flowerpots about a fox who found a soft patch of moss. Maya listened while the leaves stirred in the evening breeze.

When the garden was ready, they went indoors. Maya drew her own little bedtime list: pajamas, teeth, book, and a hug if she wanted one.

Comet added a picture of a cushion. Everyone needed a comfortable place to end the day.
