For three evenings, the station clock seemed to give everyone an extra minute. Maya would arrive just as it showed six, but the baker’s small kitchen clock already showed one minute past.
“Perhaps the station has invented more time,” Comet suggested. He hoped the extra minute might fit a snack.
The conductor smiled, but asked Maya what they could check. She suggested watching both clocks together. The baker carried her clock to the station desk.
At the next hour, the little clock’s hand moved first. The station clock followed sixty seconds later. Maya began drawing a picture of a slow clock, but the conductor stopped her gently.
“We know they disagree,” he said. “We don’t yet know which is right.”
They compared both with the conductor’s carefully checked watch. The station clock matched the watch. The kitchen clock was a minute fast.
The baker adjusted it. Maya crossed out SLOW STATION CLOCK in her notebook and wrote TWO CLOCKS, ONE QUESTION.
Comet looked disappointed about the vanished snack minute. The baker invited him to share bread after they finished tidying.
Maya put her notebook away. A good mystery did not always end with something magical. Sometimes it ended with a better question and enough ordinary time to enjoy warm bread together.
