The evening train was delayed while the station team checked a wheel. Travelers gathered beneath the porch, watching the conductor for news.
Maya kept asking when they would leave. The conductor explained what he knew: the wheel check was still underway, and he would share an update when he had one. He did not invent a finishing time.
The baker brought water and opened the reading room. Ada offered a short story. Pip found a basket of blank cards for people who preferred drawing quietly.
Maya cut a star shape from her card with the gardener’s help. On each point, she drew something she could do while waiting: read, draw, sip water, talk, or rest.
Comet chose rest. Maya chose to draw the station window, noticing details she usually hurried past. After a while, the conductor returned with a clear update. The team had finished the check, and boarding would begin soon.
Maya put her waiting card in her bag. It had not made the train arrive faster. It had reminded her that the waiting time still belonged to her.
Once aboard, she sat beside the window she had drawn. The train’s gentle movement felt even nicer after the pause. Comet opened one sleepy eye, then closed it again, perfectly satisfied with the quiet choice he had made.
