The reading room’s quilt had a worn patch near one corner. The baker had made it years earlier from blue, gold, and cream fabric. Comet liked curling under it after the last story.
Maya wanted to repair the corner with a piece that matched exactly. They searched the sewing basket, but no matching blue remained.
The baker spread out the available fabric: a gold square, a cream strip, and several little blue scraps. She asked Maya what the worn corner might become rather than what it used to be.
Maya arranged the gold square like a bright star. The small blue scraps made a darker sky around it. The cream strip became a curved path.
The baker did the stitching while Maya kept the pieces in order. Pip suggested adding three small embroidered dots, like travelers walking toward the star. Comet watched from a cushion well away from the needles.
When the patch was finished, the quilt still showed its older squares. The new corner had a constellation of its own.
Maya touched the soft seam. A perfect match would have hidden the repair, but this corner let them remember who had helped.
That evening, Ada read beneath the lamp while Comet rested under the quilt. The new star did not replace every old one. It simply helped a familiar, well-loved thing keep offering warmth for another night.
