The friends could plant one new tree beside the station. Pip wanted an apple tree. Ada wanted a willow. Comet wanted a tree that grew buns, but the gardener explained that none were available.

Maya suggested a vote. Apples received four marks; willow received three. “Apples win,” she announced.

The gardener asked everyone to look at the planting spot first. It was small, sunny, and close to a water pipe. A willow would need more room and more water than they could give it there.

Ada looked disappointed. She had imagined long branches for shade. Maya almost said that the vote was already finished. Instead, she asked why shade mattered to her.

“Some travelers wait outside on hot afternoons,” Ada explained.

The gardener showed them a smaller apple variety that would fit the space. She also suggested a simple fabric shade above the waiting bench, safely installed by the station team.

They planted the apple tree and planned the shade together. Ada helped water the young roots. Pip drew apples on the care schedule, though there would be no fruit that first evening.

Maya kept the voting paper in her notebook. Beside it she wrote: Count ideas, then understand needs.

The vote had been a useful beginning. Listening and checking the place had helped them make a plan that could actually grow.
