One hat, many questions

Before a magical hat can be an adventure, it can be something much simpler: a reminder of someone you love. For eleven-year-old Larry Carter, his late father’s kangaroo hat carries that connection. Discovering its hidden powers gives an ordinary object an extraordinary new meaning—and gives Larry questions he cannot answer by looking at it.

Meet Larry

Larry is eleven. He has a life before the doorway: school, family, and friendships that matter. That ordinary world belongs beside the fantastic one. An adventure can ask a child to do astonishing things without making everyday choices disappear.

In the first chapter, “The Wrong Answer,” a classroom project gives readers a chance to meet Larry before following him into magic. The sample is a place to notice his voice, his humor, and how he responds when something goes wrong. We will leave the discoveries to the chapter itself.

A guide named Roo

Larry does not have to make sense of the magical world alone. Roo is his guide. That relationship gives the adventure room for conversation as well as discovery: someone to ask, someone to listen to, and someone to travel beside.

As you get ready to meet them, consider a question of your own: what would you ask a guide before stepping into an unfamiliar place? You might want to know where the road leads. You might want to know how to get home. Both are good reasons to pause at a doorway.

Keep a little mystery

The hat, the door, and the world beyond are invitations to wonder. This journal will explore them without giving away the turns of the story. You do not need a map of every secret before you begin.

Larry and the Kangaroo Hat: The Door That Wasn’t There is Book One in a planned six-book series by Vohn White. It is still undergoing review, and a release date has not been announced.
